The World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is observed around the world every year on 31 May. The yearly celebration informs the public on the dangers of using tobacco and what people around the world can do to claim their right to health and healthy living and to protect future generations.
This year's World No Tobacco Day theme is "We Need Food, Not Tobacco," highlighting the link between tobacco use and food security. According to recent studies, about 14.1% of students aged 13 to 15 currently use e-cigarettes, while one in eight students in the same age group (12.5%) use various tobacco products. Youth smoking is a significant public health concern, given its harmful effects on children's physical and mental health. In addition, tobacco use harms individual health and places a significant economic burden on households and national economies. In Southeast Asia, tobacco expenditure consumes a substantial portion of household budgets, with up to 14% of low-income families spending on tobacco products.
