This campaign aims to raise awareness about the Private Members Bill on the Istanbul Convention which is set to take place on Friday 16th December 2016.
The Convention provides a practical and legal framework for tackling violence against women and girls. It sets out minimum standards for governments to meet when tackling violence against women. This means that if the UK government ratifies the convention, they will be legally bound to follow it.
If the Convention is ratified then the UK government will have a legal obligation to:
- Conduct preventative work including training professionals, integrating awareness of these issues into education;
- Guarantee the effective protection of women and girls by providing adequate refuges and women’s shelters, 24-hour helplines and specialist services;
We need 100 MPs to be present on the day of the second reading of the bill to allow it to pass onto the next stage. Please help raise awareness of the bill by changing your profile picture and using the hashtags #StandByMe or #ChangeHerStory.
More importantly, please write to your local MP and ask them to turn up and support the Convention and the debate next Friday!
