PKAVS Carers Hub are taking part in Carers Week 2017 (running between 12th June - 18th June) to raise awareness of, recognise and celebrate unpaid Carers in Perth and Kinross.
An unpaid carer is someone who helps look after a relative, friend or neighbour who can no longer manage on their own due to illness, addiction, disability or frailty. It could be a few hours a week or round the clock, in your own home or down the motorway.
Everyone is welcome to the fun events we are holding throughout the week:
Community Street Cafe in Crieff
Multicultural Afternoon Tea in Blairgowrie
Intergenerational Coffee Morning in Pitlochry
Evening Party in Perth
We are also working closely with employers (including Aviva and SSE) and various education settings (including primary and secondary schools, and Perth College) to help promote Carers Week throughout Perth and Kinross. Being a carer is much more common than you think - it is estimated that 3 in 5 people will become a carer at some point in their lives. There are 759,000 adults carers in Scotland, which is 17% of the adult population and there are an estimated 29,000 young carers in Scotland, which is 4% of the under 16 population.
Carers come from every walk of life. Regardless of age, gender or culture, if you are looking after another person on a regular basis, you are a carer. Every carer’s story is unique and many do not see themselves as a carer, they feel they are fulfilling a role that anyone else would do in a similar situation.
The aim of our Carers Week 2017 campaign is simple - many unpaid carers out there go without support because they don't even realise there's support available. We want to spread the message about unpaid carers, and encourage those with a caring role to access services in Perth and Kinross so they aren't alone. Please join the Thunderclap, and talk to your friends, family, colleagues and neighbours about unpaid carers - you might find you help someone else self-identify as a carer in the process!
