The news and entertainment media push stereotypical images of Black people that are not only insulting and inaccurate, they're dangerous. They influence how we're treated by doctors, judges, teachers and lawmakers, and can be the difference between life and death when Black folks are confronted by police — or in Trayvon Martin's case, an armed, self-appointed neighborhood watchman.
Because Trayvon was a young Black man, we're not surprised that media coverage of the Zimmerman murder trial is pervaded with ugly, racialized attacks on the victim's character — but we can do something about it. Add a Twibbon to your profile to show you're representing for Trayvon and will call out racist, race-baiting or otherwise negatively racialized media coverage of Trayvon's case.
