Student leader Majid Tavakkoli, a member of the Islamic Students Association, is serving a sentence of eight-and-a-half years in Evin Prison, in Iran's capital, Tehran. Majid Tavakkoli had been arrested in December 2009 after giving a speech at a peaceful rally marking Student Day. The demonstration was part of anti-government protests that followed the disputed presidential election of June 2009. He was reportedly beaten during his arrest, sentenced following an unfair trial in January 2010 and held mainly in solitary confinement until the end of May 2010.
