Indonesia's Unfinished Agenda: The Unsolved Murder of Munir Said Thalib
Tuesday, 2 September 2014, 4-6pm
Hedley Bull APCD Lecture Theatre Hedley Bull Centre [130], ANU
In 2004, the world was stunned by the murder of one of Indonesia's leading human rights advocates. Mu- nir Said Thalib died of lethal dose of arsenic poison- ing on a flight from Singapore to Amsterdam.
In the ten years since, the wheels of justice have turned slowly. The single conviction was overturned by the Supreme Court and questions regarding the involvement of National Intelligence Agency remains unanswered.
With his presidency drawing to a close, it is evident that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono failed to pass what he himself dubbed as "the test of our his- tory". Will his newly elected succesor, Joko Widodo "Jokowi", overturn the critics and see that justice is served, amid his dubious political affiliations?
Join us for a night of discussion and reflection with Indone- sian human rights advocate Usman Hamid, member of the Presidential Fact-Finding Team investigating murder and a personal friend of the slain activist. Also joining the panel is Dr Marcus Mietzner, renowned ANU expert on Indonesian government and politics, and Professor Simon Rice, OAM, Director of the ANU Law Reform and Social Justice program.
The discussion will be preceded by the screening of the 2009 doc- umentary “Kiri Hijau Kanan Merah: A Short Film on Munir” (Watchdoc, 48 mins).
